Early Childhood Care

For several years, the early childhood care sector has faced numerous challenges in the Brussels Region. Between 2019 and 2021, the number of early childhood care facilities decreased by 26 units, from 703 in 2019 to 677 in 2021, due to the closure of dedicated structures.

During the same period, the capacity of these facilities slightly increased by 252 places, reaching a total of 20,807 in 2021. The decrease in the number of facilities was thus offset by the opening of new structures and the increase in capacity within existing ones.

Despite the efforts of the relevant authorities, the coverage rate remains well below the needs in most Brussels municipalities. In this regard, the Municipality of Etterbeek stands out as an exception, offering a coverage rate of 85% in 2021, whereas the regional average was 44.99% for the same year (1 child out of 2 has a place in a care facility).

The Municipality of Etterbeek can boast about its positive results due to the efforts made by the College of the Mayor and Aldermen, who have made early childhood policy a top priority. A ranking by the Ligue des Familles conducted in 2023 placed Etterbeek 14th out of the 272 municipalities of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels.

The Municipality intends to maintain and even improve its results for the well-being of children and parents by ensuring the availability of buildings fully adapted for early childhood care, as well as efficient in terms of energy savings.
