Transforming Prosthetic Care with Cost-Efficient 3D Technology

Ugani Prosthetics is transforming the prosthetics industry with an innovative combination of cutting-edge 3D technology, cost-efficiency, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Initially focused on providing high-quality prosthetics to underserved low-income regions, Ugani is now scaling its operations to also meet the needs of middle- and high-income countries, where the demand for cost-efficient and scalable Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&O) solutions is on the rise. As a startup, Ugani is rapidly gaining attention from healthcare providers and clinics seeking innovative solutions to address both cost and efficiency challenges in P&O care.

Introducing the 3D Pack: Transforming Prosthetic Workshops

At the core of Ugani’s innovation is the 3D Pack - a complete, turnkey solution that addresses the fundamental challenges faced by prosthetists, including high production costs, long lead times, and the complexity of traditional prosthetic manufacturing. More than just a product, the 3D Pack provides a seamless workflow that empowers clinics and P&O workshops to produce high-quality prosthetics and orthotics more quickly, cost-effectively, and independently.

How the 3D Pack Overcomes Industry Challenges

  • 3D Scan
Ugani’s system enables clinics to scan a patient’s limb using only a smartphone, bypassing the need for expensive medical scanners (often priced at over $5,000). Leveraging the DistributedFit Model, healthcare professionals can scan patients quickly, even in remote areas, and send the data to centralized hubs or print labs for production. This approach allows a single workshop to serve a region as large as Western Europe, significantly reducing setup and operational costs.

  • 3D Model
After scanning, Ugani’s open-source software, uFit, enables prosthetists to design custom-fit prosthetics and orthotics optimized for comfort and durability. This software reduces the risk of human error, speeds up the design process, and avoids the costly licensing fees of proprietary systems, offering greater flexibility to professionals.

  •  3D Print
With cost-effective tabletop 3D printers, prosthetic sockets can be printed in-house for under €50, in contrast to the typical €1.000 required for a traditional socket. This independence from external suppliers drastically reduces production lead times, allowing clinics to meet patient needs efficiently.

The 3D Pack: A Solution for Global Impact

Ugani’s 3D Pack integrates cutting-edge technology, cost-efficiency, and accessibility, creating a practical solution for prosthetists worldwide. Whether in Europe, Asia, or rural Kenya, this modular system enables clinics to deliver high-quality devices efficiently. Traditional prosthetic workshops can spend years setting up their 3D lab and potentially waste hundreds of thousands of euros in the process. In contrast, a Ugani-equipped workshop can be operational in no more than two weeks, with setup costs typically around €25,000, allowing for significantly reduced capital requirements while maintaining high standards of care.

How Ugani Stands Out:

  • Proven Durability
One of the key advantages is the proven durability of Ugani’s prosthetics. With Ugani’s system, all tests—such as our 3 million cycles ISO durability test—have already been conducted, ensuring that prosthetists can trust the system’s quality from the start. This saves them months, if not years, of trial and error with 3D, enabling them to set up their 3D workshop without wasting their time and money

  • Low Cost
This cost-efficient setup, combined with Ugani’s optimized hardware, software, and tools, leads to the major advantage of Ugani’s technology: greater efficiency and a lower cost per produced device. It allows clinics and workshops to deliver the highest quality devices, with significantly lower overheads compared to traditional manufacturing.

  • Complete handover
Unlike other 3D providers in the P&O industry, Ugani fully trains its partners, fostering a true partnership rather than a simple buyer-seller relationship. This deep understanding of 3D technology ensures the highest quality while keeping operations lean for both Ugani and its partners. By empowering them with the knowledge they need, we push the boundaries of 3D technology together, driving growth and innovation in the P&O industry.

Success Stories and Global Impact

Since its launch, Ugani has transformed the lives of hundreds of patients. For example, Prothea Kenya, Ugani’s Nairobi workshop, has grown to four employees and provided P&O devices to over 150 patients during its first year of operation. The clinic offers five types of prosthetics and more than ten types of orthotics, including advanced myoelectric arms that respond to muscle signals. With a satisfaction score of 4.69 out of 5, the feedback from patients has been overwhelmingly positive. With funding already secured, Prothea Kenya will help an additional 300 patients before the end of 2024, further expanding its impact in the region.

In March 2024, Ugani expanded with Prothea Congo in Kinshasa, supported by the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As Ugani continues to grow, partnerships with organizations like UNICEF allow it to address the prosthetic needs of patients in conflict zones and disaster areas.

Following these successes, Ugani started selling its 3D packs in Asia and has since partnered with four companies. This proved the network approach and helped Ugani scale rapidly while empowering local partners with the adoption of its 3D technology.

Key Products and Services

  • 3D Packs
These comprehensive kits include everything a workshop needs to start 3D printing P&O devices in-house. Each pack includes upgraded 3D printers, 3D scanners, filament, spare parts, training sessions, procedures, and supply chain support. These packs make it easy for new 3D workshops to get up and running quickly, ensuring high-quality, cost-effective prosthetics are produced.

  • Custom Projects
Ugani collaborates with NGOs, governments, foundations, and international organizations to provide tailored P&O solutions in more complex contexts, like conflict or disaster zones. Examples include the Prothea Congo project and partnerships with UNICEF in war-torn regions like Palestine and Nepal after the 2023 earthquake. These projects are designed to be sustainable, with local staff trained to continue operations independently long after Ugani’s involvement ends.

  • Ugani Network Membership:
Workshops that adopt Ugani's 3D workflow can subscribe to the Ugani Network for a monthly or yearly fee. Membership gives them access to the latest technologies, ongoing support, a knowledge database, discounts on supplies, and new P&O designs. Members are part of a global network, sharing knowledge and innovations to improve their services continuously.

  • Reseller Agreements and Additional Services:
Ugani offers multiple extra services, like reselling prosthetic components, 3D printer parts, and tested filament. In some regions we also directly sell 3D printed prosthetics to workshops who hesitate to make the transition to 3D. This proves our technology and leads to sales of 3D packs later on. And lastly our own 3D modeling software, uFit. Ugani’s open-source software allows any prosthetist to model P&O devices in 3D with ease. The basic version of uFit is free to use and provides everything necessary for creating basic P&O designs. The premium version unlocks additional features like larger compatibility, dashboards, extra editing tools, and is available to all Ugani Network members. This tool democratizes access to P&O design technology, ensuring anyone can use it, regardless of budget.
